Deployment Environmental Surveillance Program (DESP)
Program Manager: 584-6096/Commercial (410) 436-6096
Knowledge of the health risks from occupational and environmental health
exposures can benefit the field commanders and their medical staff in assessing
the medical threat and determining appropriate countermeasures.
The DESP includes assessment of all occupational and environmental exposures
that deployed troops may encounter and evaluation of potential health risks.
The DESP is an expansion of the work
USACHPPM has been conducting on the exposure of Operation Desert Storm veterans
to oil well fire emissions. Extensive exposure data and information are
obtained on all potential theaters of operation worldwide. Prior to deployment,
the DESP is used to determine possible medical threats and appropriate
countermeasures to alert commanders to the potential occupational and
environmental dangers in the region. During and following deployment, the
actual exposure data and medical outcomes are gathered from the field and/or
research groups to alert the field commander and his medical staff, the DOD
community, and the Veterans Administration of potential health threats to
deployed troops.
By linking the various databases containing environmental exposure data,
medical outcome data, troop movement information, and geographic locations, and
by using the Geographical Information System, the DES provides map overlays to
display health risks to deployed personnel.
Health Risk Communication Program
Program Manager: DSN 584-3515/Commercial 5-3515
Our mission is to develop effective risk communication programs throughout the
United States Army and the DoD. It is vital to integrate risk communication
planning, processes, and skills into the military mission by promoting srategic
partnerships with stakeholders, leading to mutual gains in sustaining our
troops, surrounding communities, and the environment. Working collaboratively
with stakeholders results in establishing trust and credibility when health
risks exist, whether real or perceived, and enhances the crucial communication
required to sustain the Army's mission. Our consulting services provide
planning, facilitation, negotiation, and mediation support to help you foster
opportunities for jointly identifying and resolving both short-term and
long-term issues. Our training program provides opportunities for learning and
applying risk communication principles and skills to accomplish your mission.
